Father/Daughter Talk

Got this over email a while ago.
As I don't usually talk about politics here, I might delete this post in a day or two.

Edited to add: But I really like this... it might stay!

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so
many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal
Democrat, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of
higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words
redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch
Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures
that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a
professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil,
selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher
taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The
self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be
the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking
how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA,
and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she
was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying,
which left her no time to go out and party like other people she
knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really
have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, 'How is your friend Audrey
doing?' She replied, 'Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are
easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She
is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always
invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show
up for classes because she's too hung over.'

Her wise father asked his daughter, 'Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your
friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and
certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.'

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily
fired back, 'That's a crazy idea, and how would that be fair! I've
worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a
lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree.
She played while I worked my tail off!'

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, 'Welcome to the
Republican party.'

If anyone has a better explanation of the difference between
Republican and Democrat, I'm all ears.

  1. Not the same thing. The example listed is very true. However the girl getting the 4.0 did nothing to keep the poor girl with the 2.0 from also getting the higher grades.

The Republican party with its practices of saying one thing and doing another is a whole different ball game. No matter how hard some people work (women for example) they can never get ahead because of the republican policies. The attitude of our president and his cronies can best be compared to Marie Antionette (supposed) statement "Let them eat cake!" John McCain living in one of his wives 8 mansions feels that they should just "suck it up" There is no compassion, there is no humanity, there is no real understanding of people who have to work for a living. They put out things like this and expect people to be snowed by their rhetoric. Well I am not, I have seen the single mother in the eye glasses store telling her little daughter "we will have to ask your daddy if you can get the glasses you need." I have seen the kid come to school saying "I can't pay for the trip because we don't have the money. Democrats are all about helping EVERYONE. Not just a few. Sorry, I get upset about this type of posting. J

  2. And that's why I don't talk about politics with friends.

Because this type of post upsets people.

Because I'm so sick of seeing political posts and I just mark things as read so they don't show up in my reader anymore.

Because I like to play nice and I like it when everybody just gets along.

    But, dammit, I'm right.
And I'm leaving this up. (for now)
And even if we disagree, I don't care- and I'm willing to overlook my liberal friends' political opinions and just play nice.

    THE END.

  3. Have to agree with you, Blondie. I absolutely, positively refuse to accept the premise that "No matter how hard some people work (women for example) they can never get ahead because of the republican policies." It just isn't true. It's that attitude and way of thinking that keeps people down--not a political party and its policies. JMHO

__Blondie, I won't be offended if you delete this response. :) __

  4. That is awesome!! I love it! And good for you for posting it. I love how democrats (like your first commentor on this post) feel free to bash the Republican party without ever giving a concrete example. Good job being a voice for young Republicans - seems we are all too quiet these days.

  5. I'm not a liberal, that is a stereotype. A label if you will. I am a Democrat that opposes gay marriage, letting all the mexicans in and other retarded liberal crap. I work 12 hour shifts, make great money and always did well in school. I pay all my bills on time and even believe in God. Not sure what the girl in your example(the one that makes bad grades) and I have in common, except that I am well liked by my peers. I think Bush is an idiot though, I believe he may have more in common with the girl in your example that does poorly, makes bad decisions and isn't very smart. I feel sorry for him. Bless his heart. 6. I am so with you on this, Blondie. Your first commenter is very, very wrong. People who work hard will reap the rewards. I am a woman, and am doing quite well in life, as is my sister. And its not because anyone handed it to us. To believe that it is one political party holding people down is nuts. And it is exactly that frame of mind (that its somebody else's fault) that keeps people from really trying and getting ahead.

Blondie spoke... now you speak.

It's nice taking turns.

Have a great day!
